As any business person knows, people do not buy products, they buy brand. People invest in a company, purchasing with their hard earned money, the products and services they need because they believe that the product and service adds value to their lives in align with their social and moral stances. When a consumer feels that their morality is in line with the company they do business with a bond of trust is established. This relationship of trust is the foundation for a successful relationship between consumer and business.
The recent debate on guns is an important example of brand vs product. Manufacturers are producing products of quality, yet they are loosing sales because the brand is associated with a situation that is against the morals of the consumer.
This is Business 101.
This week in the Vampire Community News ( https://www.facebook.com/groups/vampirecommunitynews/) a discussion of the Unity Organization, is it positive or negative for the real vampire subculture, occurred.
Instead of a healthy discussion on customer service, improved messaging and PR, and how best to present a healthy presentation of culture, and other solid conversations, the direct opposite occurred.
The conversation became negative and toxic. There was libel, slander, and other issues that, under normal circumstance, would have lead to a PR nightmare and termination of employees along with a heavy charm offensive to manage damage control.
Instead of honest evaluation of the situation there was just acceptance of toxicity and negativity as the status quo. A morose acceptance that the culture self destructs every five years and that this behavior is normal.
This display of unprofessional behavior demonstrates why it is difficult for any artistic or philosophical movement to re-brand itself into a positive and healthy consumer desired marketable product. The same for any start up business with a unique concept.
Failure of leadership to elevate the brand into a desired item in alignment with the morality of its consumer.
In this case, of the vampire community the item or products, if you will, is the creation of a stable and functional community that with stand public examination.
Seeing that the community itself was not able change course, I adapted a business model. Created a Social Business Plan for my organization along with a Social Vision Statement.
When you no longer can afford to allow others to define you, you must turn to solid, reliable, and traditional methods to get your message to the public.
You can not pretend that things will take care of themselves. You must respond in a clear and decisive way to demonstrate to the general public that you are not like the rest of your competition.
My response to libel, slander, insults, and a host of other attacks is as follows
“Do you think name calling, insults, and personal attacks further this discussion?
The 300 people who chosen to follow me are not a joke.
The 4000.00 we raised last years is not a joke.
The 300.00 we have raised so far this year is not a joke.
This is where failure in leadership lies.
The “Trumping” of the vampire community.
In normal society making accusations get you sued and fired. In normal society, when you make libel claims, accusations of criminality and mental defect, you get fired.
In vampire culture it is celebrated.
Which is why vampire culture reinvents itself every five years.
Because no one wants to learn the hard lessons of the past.
The vast majority of the people do not tolerate this behavior.
You can not go through the natural maturation process from fringe culture, to sub culture, to general pop culture without a sense of discipline and maturity.
Thus attempts of unification, at unity, at gathering, and all the other grand names and ideals last about 5 years, until they are only memories on video, footnotes on research papers,
Which is why I turned my court into a business.
Run it like a business.
Run it on mature and disciplined principles of “Best Practices”
Have a Business Plan for the court that is updated and reviewed regularly.
They only way to stop the cycle of self destruction is just to remove yourself from that cycle.
It is working.”
The result was an ROI of new members to my organization, The Vampire Court of Houston.

Vampires are high maintenance. There is no other way to put it. All vampires, for some reason or another, need energy. Chi, qi, mana, prana, the names of energy are endless! However, at the end of the day, energy is a product, a good, a material that must be consumed. The very nature of the vampire is to be the ultimate consumer!
Have you ever thought about what it exactly takes for you, the modern real vampire, to feed? It takes people, meaning that you must have the entire economic cycle to sustain a population! Utilities, food, transportation, jobs, manufacturing, commercial and banking systems, schools, hospitals, fire and police at bare minimum! But that is the bare minimum!
If energy is the product, emotion the raw material, then art and culture is the manufacturing plant.
Most vampires have a prefered method of feeding because there is a favorite “flavor” of emotions that a real vampire enjoys. Night Clubs, Sex Clubs, Art Galleries, Parks, Opera, Theater and so forth. All these require buildings, maintenance, economic management to stay open, advertising and promotion, staff, performers, so forth and so on. In short, a highly complex economic system must be in place to sustain even the smallest group of real vampires to ensure a constant supply of healthy energy for our varies tastes and preferences.
Awareness and rationality!
The point of all of this is to get the real vampire culture to think. To grow beyond the, wake up, feed, sleep, repeat. To think, to examine, to grow. To place your needs and desires in the proper social, economic, political, and spiritual context, just like ALL social groups do, we begin to take control of our existence in the most practical way, shifting from fantasy to reality.
That is always a good thing!
I am a game geek. Like many of you I enjoy Vampire The Masquerade and World of Darkness, now in the hands of Onyx Path Publishing . Also like many of you I was disappointed when I learned that the on line version of WOD was canceled.
So when I heard of Shadows Kiss Online game I was ecstatic. Finally a game that would allow us to play in a dark and gother world, a dark world, in a world of ….
Oh wait, that title is taken.
But I mean there is plenty of vampire material out there! They are raising over $50,000 on kick starter! Surly they would do the research and avoid work that was the creation of others right?
“sigh Not even TRYING to disguise their source. I mean, c’mon – “Kindred spirits”? “Blood dolls”? “A dark, Gothic version of our world”?
Why not just call yourselves “Albino Lupine Game Studios” and wrap your penis in a flag that says “We dare you to sue the shit out of us”?

And before anyone starts in with the usual “Yeah, but vampires and werewolves existed a long time before White Wolf” or “V:tM was just an Anne Rice rip-off”… no. Yeah, the Pale Puppy team drew inspiration from a variety of sources – including Rice, who was consulted and credited back in the day; we, however, credited our sources, created new elements that had not been seen before, and spun old ideas in new ways. These folks are not even bothering to change the names of unique, copyrighted terms and concepts that originated in the World of Darkness. Hell, they’re even tossing those terms and concepts around in their trailer.
Maybe these hard-working programmers and designers should have first consulted a competent copyright attorney.”
This is not the first time White Wolf had their intellectual property stolen.
In 2003 White Wolf sued Sonny over Underworld contesting over 60 points of copyright infringement! Sony settled the case privately.
I began to think and thus this question.
So how much does the real vampire community borrow from fiction?
All these are terms from White Wolf and Vampire the Masquerade
Charlaine Harris gave us the following terms which are being used in the vampire community.
Vampire Kings and Queens
Nights Clubs called Fangtasia
While borrowing concepts from other sources is a time honored tactic, it makes those borrowing them seem less than authentic at times. While there are many wonderful monarchies the in the community and many wonderful organizations that use terms from White Wolf, Charlaine Harris, Anne Rice and more, the problem rises in legitimacy vs role play.
If there is no uniqueness, no originality, nothing that sets the reality of our unique culture from the fantasy that surrounds our culture, then making the steps from sub culture to culture is made more difficult.
While difficult, perhaps it is time for us in the real vampire culture to take a moment and examine our words, our language, and our culture to craft something uniquely our own, and not merely a shadow of some fantastic games.
